Public Works Department
The Holden Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the Town’s vital infrastructure and ensuring that our roads, facilities, and equipment remain safe, functional, and dependable throughout the year. The department maintains over forty miles of public roads and more than eighty miles of rights-of-way, providing safe and efficient travel for residents, school buses, emergency vehicles, and visitors alike.
Given Maine’s rugged climate and Holden’s mix of paved and gravel roads, maintenance operations must adapt seasonally to meet changing conditions. During the winter months, the department’s efforts are most visible as crews work tirelessly—often around the clock—to keep roads clear of snow and ice. Plow operators monitor storm forecasts, treat roadways with salt and sand, and respond promptly to ensure safe passage for the traveling public, no matter the weather.
Once the snow melts, the focus shifts to summer maintenance and improvement projects. These include grading and shaping gravel roads, patching potholes, cutting brush along rights-of-way, replacing and cleaning culverts, repairing shoulders, and addressing drainage issues that can compromise road integrity. The department also manages paving and resurfacing projects in coordination with local contractors to extend the lifespan of Holden’s road network.
Beyond roadwork, the Public Works team provides year-round maintenance for all Town-owned vehicles, heavy equipment, and municipal facilities. This includes everything from oil changes and hydraulic repairs to mowing town grounds, maintaining the transfer station, and assisting other departments with special projects and event setups.
Every task—large or small—plays an important role in supporting the Town’s operations and overall quality of life. The dedication and versatility of the Public Works crew ensure that Holden remains a clean, safe, and well-maintained community in every season.
