Trash & Recycling

Holden has adopted a pay-per bag household trash collection program.  Residents may use plastic trash bags or metal or plastic containers.  The maximum size of the bag or container is 33 gallons and must not weigh more than 40 pounds when full.  Each bag and container should be placed at roadside by 7:00 A.M. on trash collection day and must have an approved sticker placed around the neck of each back or it will not be picked up.   

Household Trash Pickup: (Effective 7/1/2007)

Curbside household trash pickup is every Thursday. Check with Pine Tree Waste Inc. 1-800-639-6205 or call the Town Office (843-5151) for holiday changes.

The price of trash stickers is $1.75 each. They can be purchased at the following locations:

Curbside Single Stream Recycling Pickup: (Effective 3/10/2011) Curbside recycling pickup every other Thursday.  Sometimes the trucks run late, so leave items out, and if they are not picked up by the next morning call Pine Tree Waste Inc. 1-800-639-6205 or the Town Office at 843-5151

Recycling Center: Effective 3/1/2011

There will no longer be a recycling center locate at the Highway Garage (located next to the Town Office) in Holden.

Zero Sort Recycling Guide

 Effective 10-1-2010

 

Single Stream Recycling method the following items will be accepted:

Paper:   Newsletters, magazines, flyer's, junk main, catalogs & mail, phone books, paperback books, paper (all colors-staples ok), paper bags, file folders, wrapping paper, milk, soda crates

Metal: Cans (steel, tin & aluminum), aerosol cans (empty), aluminum (trays, foil, etc.)

Plastic: Milk jugs, detergent, shampoo bottles, all plastic containers(#1-#7), blister packaging, plastic clamshell containers, soda, juice & water bottles, kitty litter buckets (handle ok), toys (must have some give), laundry baskets, trash bins, landscape trays, plant pots, milk, soda crates

Glass:  All glass bottles and jars

 

Cardboard: Cereal boxes, shoeboxes, etc., paper towel cores, pizza boxes, milk & juice cartons, drink boxes, aseptic containers

 

 NOT ACCEPTABLE

 Window Glass, Mirrors, Light Bulbs, Dishes, Pyrex or ceramics containers, Foam Packaging, Styrofoam, Plastic Bags, items containing food waste, paint or oils, hazardous material or universal waste. No wood products.

Universal Waste

Used items which contain mercury are considered universal waste.  This includes items such as televisions, computers, monitors, printers, copiers, fluorescent bulbs and thermostats.  These items many be taken to the Brewer Universal Waste Disposal Facility located at 37 Oak Street in Brewer during their regular business hours .  A permit is required which may be obtained at the Holden Town Office.  There is a fee for disposal of these items.

Items containing mercury may also be taken to the Pine Tree Land Fill in Hampden.  There is a fee for disposal but no permit is required.

Household Hazardous Waste

Holden participates in an annual regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, usually held at the Bangor Public Works Facility on Saturday of the first weekend in October.  Holden residents may take the following items to the Bangor facility on that day:

Old gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid; oil based paint, paint thinner, paint remover, linseed oil, varnish, turpentine; pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, chemical fertilizer, rat poison.

Currently there is no charge for residents but a permit is required.
