MARRIAGE LICENSES

HOW DO WE GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE?
1. If you are a resident of the State of Maine, you only need to go to the City or Town Clerk's office in which one of you reside in.

Example: Bride lives in Holden, but Groom lives in Bangor.  You can go to either Holden or Bangor to file your intentions. You do not have to go to both places. Choose which town or city that is more convenient for you especially if you need certified copies at a later date.

2. If you are residents of another state coming into Maine to marry, you can go to any City or Town in the State of Maine to file your intentions and marry anywhere within the State.

Example: Bride and Groom live in Florida and are flying into Bangor.  They can file their intentions at the City Clerk's Office in Bangor and then go to Bar Harbor and be married.

3. If a prior marriage ended in either death or divorce, the clerk needs to see a certified copy of the death certificate or divorce decree. Photocopies are not acceptable.

4. The license is valid for 90 days.

5. License fee $40.00.

MAINE NO LONGER REQUIRES A THREE DAY WAITING PERIOD AFTER FILING THE MARRIAGE INTENTIONS. THE LICENSE CAN NOW BE ISSUED THE SAME DAY THE INTENTIONS ARE FILED.
