Fire & Rescue

Volunteer Opportunities

The Holden Fire/Rescue Department is a combination department consisting of two career firefighters and an authorized paid on-call/volunteer roster of 25 members, including both firefighters and emergency medical technicians. Call Firefighters and EMT's are compensated for their response to emergency incidents and attendance at in-house training sessions. Paid on-call members are considered special employees of the Town of Holden and are hired in accordance with Town policies.

Firefighter:

Description: Provides fire suppression and other emergency services by responding to uncontrolled fires and hazardous situations including, but not limited to, structure fires, vehicle fires, grass/woods fires, fuel spills, downed utility wires and automobile accidents.

Qualifications: No experience necessary. Must be at least 18 years old and reside in or within 10 miles of the Town of Holden. Must have an active Maine driver's license with no significant violation history. Must have no criminal record history.

Other Information: Being a call firefighter is a major commitment and requires a considerable amount of time. Currently our call firefighters provide approximately 4 to 16 hours of service each week responding to emergency incidents and attending weekly training sessions.

Emergency Medical Technician:

Description: Provides basic emergency medical care and crisis intervention to the sick and injured. Assists in promoting health and safety awareness through community programs supported by the Department.

Qualifications: Must hold a current State of Maine Emergency Medical Technician license at the basic level or higher, or be eligible to be licensed at the EMT-B level. Must be at least 18 years old and reside in the Town of Holden. Must have an active Maine driver's license with no significant violation history. Must have no criminal record history.

Other Information: Holden Fire/Rescue is a first response EMS agency and is licensed at the First Responder level and permitted to the EMT-Intermediate level. Patient transport is provided by Capital Ambulance of Bangor.

Explorer Post Member:

Description: The Fire/Rescue Department, in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America sponsors an explorer firefighter post in an effort to recruit future Department members and to expose high school students to career opportunities within EMS and the fire service.

Qualifications: Must be 16 or 17 years old, enrolled and attending high school and a resident of the Town of Holden. Explorer Post members must maintain a passing average in all academic classes.

Other Information: Explorer Post members attend regularly scheduled Department training sessions as well as special Explorer Post training sessions. Qualified Explorer Post members are allowed to ride on apparatus and respond to certain incidents under the direct supervision of a Department officer. Explorer Post members are not allowed in any situation or areas that are immediately dangerous to life and health.

Fire Department Auxiliary:

Description: The Holden Fire/Rescue Auxiliary is a separate volunteer, non-profit organization established to assist and support the Holden Fire/Rescue Department. The Auxiliary holds several fundraising events each year and sponsors Fire/Rescue Department family activities. The Auxiliary also maintains and awards the Arthur Copeland Memorial Scholarship each year to a deserving student who is furthering his or her education in the field of fire science technology.

Qualifications: Membership in the Auxiliary is open to anyone who is interested in volunteering, having fun and making a difference in the community.

Other Information: Auxiliary members meet monthly and do not respond to emergency incidents. Auxiliary members however may provide logistical support at large incidents. This is an outstanding opportunity for anyone who does not have the time or flexibility to become a firefighter or and EMT but still wishes to contribute to the community.
